Legally Green©

Our firm culture is one in which we value our colleagues, put our clients first, invest in our communities, and strive for excellence in everything we do. Given this culture, it was a natural transition to create an initiative that focuses on environmental sustainability, complementing our existing diversity and pro bono programs and furthering our efforts to create a sustainable workplace. In 2007, Nixon Peabody appointed a Chief Sustainability Officer and launched the Legally Green® initiative, a unique program focusing on environmental sustainability that encompasses client service, internal responsibility, and thought leadership.

Client service

Sustainability is transforming corporate culture, decision-making, and operations, requiring an innovative way of delivering legal services. When properly embedded in an organization’s business strategy, sustainability can be the gateway to new business opportunity, major cost savings, and risk reduction. Nixon Peabody has become a leader in helping clients to understand the risks and opportunities associated with sustainability, transform their operations, and create long-term value. We provide integrated services to our clients focused on sustainable technologies, products, and solutions, providing advice in areas such as green building, tax credits, cleantech, climate change, and renewable energy project development and finance.

Internal responsibility

An equally important part of what it means to be Legally Green involves being responsible stewards of our environment. At Nixon Peabody, we have identified priority areas and goals, and implemented sustainable practices firmwide. Among our many achievements, Nixon Peabody is proud to be one of the first law firms in the nation to embrace sustainable building practices with four of our offices having green building ratings, including LEED® Silver and Gold certifications. We rank #3 in the “green category” of Vault’s 2012 List of The Best Law Firms to Work For. And Computerworld recognized Nixon Peabody as one of the top 12 green information technology (IT) organizations. As proud as we are of our achievements, we continue to explore ways in which we can improve upon the sustainability of our workplace.

Thought leadership

Nixon Peabody shares its experiences and best practices, actively participates in organizations with a sustainability mission, and partners with clients and others on joint sustainability initiatives. Time after time we have been called the “go-to firm” for domain knowledge in this space. Recognizing our leadership in the renewable energy, green building, cleantech, and other sustainability-aligned sectors, Nixon Peabody attorneys are frequently sought out for national and global writing and speaking engagements and to serve on boards and committees of organizations with a sustainability mission.

Green pro bono

Nixon Peabody attorneys and staff have a rich history of supporting the communities in which we live. Over the years, Nixon Peabody has provided pro bono services to a wide variety of international, national, and local nonprofit organizations in their pursuit of environmental causes. As part of a joint initiative between our Legally Green and Pro Bono programs, we have identified attorneys throughout the firm who are personally and professionally interested in assisting clients on green pro bono matters. We also partner with clients on pro bono projects. Click here for more information on how we can assist you with a green pro bono project.
