ResponsibilitySince 2007, Nixon Peabody’s Legally Green® initiative has been spearheaded by the firm’s Chief Sustainability Officer and a firmwide Green Operations Steering Committee. Through the efforts of our CSO, Green Ops, and our local sustainability teams, we have identified priority areas, established goals, and implemented sustainable practices firmwide. We ensure that we “walk the talk,” performing quarterly reviews to track office-based compliance with our firmwide commitments. And we continuously strive to improve ourselves, challenging our firm managers and office administrators to find new ways to achieve measurable progress in each of our priority areas. Firmwide commitment to excellenceWe engage all of our personnel, recognizing that we each have an individual role to play in creating a more sustainable world, and that, together, we can make a real difference. Some of our best ideas have come from our volunteer corps of local sustainability teams, including the suggestion to purchase a small fleet of firm-owned bicycles that are available to employees to run errands, meet clients, or appear in court. We continue to challenge ourselves to be creative and innovative. For example, our Boston office participates in A Better City’s Challenge for Sustainability, setting annual goals to improve our sustainability performance. Our firmwide Pocket Change Challenge raises thousands of dollars in small change that is donated to local environmental organizations—a testament to the power of collective action. We recently developed an intranet-based Legally Green Pledge, which serves as an interactive educational tool that encourages us to make simple, personal commitments that collectively help our firm become a more sustainable workplace. As proud as we are of our past commitments, we know that there is still much work to be done. To meet our firmwide goal of professional excellence we must not only provide the best client service, we must also honor our responsibility as a good corporate citizen. We view this as an ongoing challenge, and we continuously look for ways to better ourselves. |
