Pro bono
Summer associates at Nixon Peabody are provided the opportunity to help with pro bono cases. There is an urgent need for pro bono work in all the cities in which our offices are located, and we strongly encourage our summer associates to get involved. Pro bono opportunities are wide ranging. Our San Francisco summer associates work for homeless advocacy. In New York City, summer associates assist in asylum matters. In Boston, summer associates represent low income elderly clients, victims of domestic violence, and work on Anti Defamation League projects.
The firm places a high value on pro bono work and awards attorneys who perform 100 hours or more of pro bono services. In addition, we have a designated a partner whose sole responsibility is to coordinate pro bono efforts across the firm.

Legally Green®
We launched the Legally Green® initiative to denote the firm’s unique combination of experience, thought leadership, and responsible citizenship. We believe these challenges require an innovative way of delivering legal services and raise the bar for what a sustainable law firm should do. We have become a leader among U.S. law firms in implementing sustainable practices and in sharing lessons learned with other law firms and businesses and with the communities that we live and work in.
Summer associates are invited to participate in our local sustainable team meetings, join local and firm-wide sustainability events, and are encouraged to volunteer for green pro bono projects.

Opportunity
We believe the best way to attract and retain talented new attorneys is to give them a chance to do interesting and challenging work. As a new associate, your responsibilities will go beyond research and document review. You will work on teams that include secretaries, professional specialists, paralegals, senior associates, and partners. It’s not uncommon for first-year associates to have client contact and to take a key role in a case or business transaction. When our associates talk to colleagues in other firms, those colleagues often are surprised by the level of work that first and second year associates at Nixon Peabody are doing.

Personal development
Our training programs are designed to build skills and knowledge at every stage of your career. Summer associates learn broadly about different practice areas and attend programs that provide a foundation of professional practice skills. First-year associates learn skills to assist in the transition from law school to law practice. Second, third and fourth year associates continue their personal development through best-in-class programs in areas such as litigation, business and finance, real estate, new business and professional skills development. The training programs are engaging and include activities that give attorneys a chance to get to know their colleagues from other offices.

Mentoring
We strongly believe in mentoring because it is critical to turning promising associates into productive, successful attorneys. You will be assigned a mentor who is on hand to answer all your questions – no matter how small. In addition to our formal mentoring program, you’ll find that mentoring is a key value of our culture. In fact, senior associates and partners are evaluated on their ability to mentor junior attorneys.
At Nixon Peabody, you feel comfortable going to a partner with whom you’re working and discussing the issues and strategy of a case. They don’t just toss research assignments at you; they’re actually willing to take the time to talk with you. Not only do you learn more this way, but it makes you feel like an important part of the team. — Christine Vargas, associate

Teamwork
We are a global law firm with clients who are leaders in their industries. We work hard to exceed client’s expectations. But we make it enjoyable by working as a team. If you are on an intense case or a large and important business deal or transaction, other associates and partners will help you to meet the challenge. If you have personal matters to attend to, or simply want to take some vacation time, your team members will cover for you. We work hard, to be sure, but we also work together.
Associates at the firm help each other out. When I went to Patagonia for vacation, I did not have access to e-mail for the whole week. It was not a big deal. People covered for me.
