Chicago, IL. International law firm Nixon Peabody LLP announces that the firm’s Chicago office has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design® (LEED) Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council in the category of “Commercial Interiors.” This is Nixon Peabody’s fourth office space to receive LEED certification furthering the firm’s “green” leadership role in the legal industry.

“In settling into our new location in downtown Chicago, we have proven that sustainable building and ‘green’ business practices are not only cost-effective, but also positively affect our employees,” said Stephen G. Rudisill, managing partner of Nixon Peabody’s Chicago office. “LEED Gold is a tremendous accolade for our Chicago office and our firm and one we are extremely proud to receive.”

Nixon Peabody’s Chicago office was designed by architectural firm DiMella Shaffer and the general contract work was done by Chicago-based Skender Construction. The office was built in accordance with sustainable building practices and with the firm’s Legally Green commitment in mind. It features multiple green elements, all of which contributed to achieving LEED certification, including:

  • The build-out has high recycled content in its carpet and ceiling tiles, low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, linoleum flooring made from rapidly renewable materials, and sustainable bamboo paneling.
  • The majority of the office furniture is GreenGuard® certified, and many fabrics throughout the space are made of recycled content.
  • The office desks, central workstations, and conference room tables are made of formaldehyde-free, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood products.
  • The office also features design elements which will help reduce water and energy consumption, including glass partitions and sidelights that help natural light penetrate the office space and sensors to adjust lighting based on the extent of existing natural light.

“The firm is committed to providing healthy and environmentally responsible workplaces and receiving LEED certification—especially at the Gold level—is an incredible achievement,” said Carolyn Kaplan, the firm’s chief sustainability officer. “Once again, Nixon Peabody has raised the bar when it comes to the legal profession ‘going green.’”

Nixon Peabody was the first major U.S. law firm to achieve LEED certification for its San Francisco office in 2007. The firm has additional LEED Silver certified office spaces in Albany, NY, and New York, NY.
